Gary, I would commend you on your scholarly observation – if only it were accurate ! "Filby" is indeed the way H.G. Wells spelled it. The name is written this way in the original manuscript. It is printed as such in the New Review serial of 1895. It is so in the Heinemann 1895 British edition and also in the Holt 1895 American edition. Likewise, it appears as such in the revised 1924 Atlantic edition. It might have helped if you had checked the facts – out of respect for H.G. Wells ! |
