I just purchased, and am listening to the soundtrack of the new TM film. What a great score. This was done by Klaus Badelt. Even if the film was not that well received, the sound track is first rate. I see in the CD jacket some photos that did not appear in the film. I guess the older gentelman who did not show up in the film was a university prof. I wish the film could have been as good as the music. I still want the DVD though. It may have some extra footage. I know many of you did not like the new movie, but I did even though it wasn't true to Wells book. |

Posted At 18:48:10 04/16/2002 Indeed. A friend of mine who also liked the music very much wrote me about the fact that there are on the CD jacket no less than two pictures of the older gentleman who I understand is suppose to be the dean of the school. As discussed before, this gentleman also appears in the trailer and certainly seemed to be an interesting and colourful character. It is rather strange that he would appear in the trailer and twice on the CD jacket and yet, not make it to the screen. Many movie-goers who had seen the trailer felt cheated out of some great scenes that might have given more substance to the movie. We're all hoping that all the cut scenes will make it to the DVD. Perhaps this will improve it a bit. But I'll wait for a report on the content of the DVD before I consider buying it ! |

Posted At 19:49:47 04/21/2002 I fear something terrible must have happened while the dreamworks version of the time machine was being made. I read Mr S.Wells suffered from exhaustion or something and was replaced near the end of production. I think everybody involved must have known at some point the film was in trouble. That must be a horrible feeling knowing J.Q.Public is going rip your heart out if you screw up. My feelings go out to Mr Wells. This project was a huge undertaking. I liked it, and will buy the DVD just to find out what happened and catch the deleated parts if they are there. |

Posted At 15:23:25 04/22/2002 The question is: If they knew the film was in trouble, why did they not do anything about it ? The most likely reason why many scenes were cut is to get people like us to buy the DVD in the hope of seeing the cut scenes. It looks like it's gonna work ! (We are soooo predictable...) |

Posted At 19:32:46 04/22/2002 I do not believe ANY filmmaker OR studio would intentionally delete scenes from a film to make the later DVD release of the film sell better !! To do so to the point where the theatrically released film is disjointed or incomplete would be to doom the film to failure at the box office. Even marginally intelligent film producers would KNOW that they NEED to do well at the box office...AND the later released home version will do better in direct relationship to how many of us enjoyed the film to begin with. The biggest problem this film had was the insistance by the studio (& Simon Wells himself) that this was to be the ULTIMATE version of H.G. Wells' original story...forcing us to make that comparison....a comparison which was destined to make the film look very poorly done. Simon Wells did an interview with Starlog which appeared in the April issue in which he makes it VERY clear that this film was NOT intended to be a remake of the 1960 film nor a direct re-telling of his Great Grandfather's story. He claims this was the story he wanted to tell....& felt it his right as the filmmaker to tell the story he wanted to tell. Guess what...he does have that right !! BUT it is a dirty rotten shame he could not have talked like this BEFORE the film was released so we could have been allowed to judge it on its own merits & not have been forced to compare it to "The Time Machine". It should've been entitled "Hartdegen's Odyssey" !!!....it was a very intense story of his pain & obsession and where it leads him...and as such it was enjoyable...but not a story which could stand up to close scrutiny of the science involved or the paradoxes it opened nor did it get into too much study of what the future of the human race might be due to what we have put in motion in our own time. (H.G.'s story was ABOUT what COULD HAPPEN in the future "if this goes on") ... To get back to the original posted point....I too think the soundtrack is WONDERFUL !!! It really evokes the intensity & passion Hartdegen wrestled with in the film's story...it is HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL !!! I DO have the CD & have been listening to it a lot !! |

Posted At 22:36:06 04/22/2002 What DreamWorks didn't consider is that it was measuring itself (in term of its screen writer) against an extremely well-known classic of literature. People went in the movie theatre expecting to see Wells's story on screen... but what they saw instead had little in common with it. The phrase Simon Wells used in the Starlog interview was "If I don't have the right to SCREW AROUND with the story, who does ?" That pretty much sums it up ! But Simon Wells admitted in the introduction to the movie tie-in book that when he became involved, the basic script by John Logan was pretty well finalized. In fact, some of his comments suggest that he might not have wanted it to go quite that way, but he didn't have much choice in the matter. As for the deleted scenes - considering that some appear on the trailer - one gets the impression that the final cut was rushed. Just last year, "Planet of the Apes" was re-edited several times in the last few days before its release. It looks like they had a similar problem with "The Time Machine". As to the DVD version, I think Peter was just being sarcastic as to why they cut out the scenes but he's right on the money as to why they will probably put them back on the DVD... The marketing people in the movie industry are experts at finding ways of getting people to buy the same products many times over. Just look at "Blade Runner - director's cut" "Close Encounters - Special edition" "Star Wars - all the episodes you saw and already bought but with a few new scenes" and, just recently: "E.T. with new scenes" !!! And we fall for it every time ! |

Posted At 07:02:03 04/26/2002 I totally agree...what a superb debut!!!...very reminiscent of Jerry Goldsmith (who was attached to the film and would have done a superb job also)but Klaus has captured the adventure, the melodrama and the feel so well with his cues that I think we'll be hearing a lot more from him.....if you liked this score listen to cuts from The Edge OST by Jerry Goldsmith...some of the french horn melodies are similar....what about track 6.."i don't belong here"...it's amazing isn't it!!!!! gary |

Posted At 16:57:51 05/27/2002 I love the whole theme that introduces the Eloi..its almost magical. I left the movie thinking more about the soundtrack than the movie itself! If you liked the Time Machine soundtrack, I highly recommend the music by Hans Zimmer (Klaus Badelt worked with him on a number of other soundtracks), Jerry Goldsmith and a group called 2002. (www.2002music.com). Also works by Gavin Greenaway. All very good music! |

Posted At 11:24:44 05/30/2002 I loved the soundtrack. There aren't many soundtrack where I like the whole of it instead of just a few songs.. While watching the 2002v movie, I did get a very odd feeling as if I'd read H.G.Wells' book and then fell asleep while playing Riven..and ended up dreaming about both at the same time..but I could enjoy the movie anyway- the music made a difference to me.. Wish they hadn't ditched those morlock goggles |
