Building a Time Machine

The Engine Housing

March 10, 2025

The side pieces are made of 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood and were cut with a router.
I used strips of cove molding to transition from the vertical housing to the side flanges.
The holes on the side are for air circulation. I'll install two fans on either side the top fan will blow into the housing and the lower one will blow air into the pod.
The curved surface was covered in Wacky Wood. (Yes, that's a real thing) primer and spot putty
Krylon Hunter Green, matched to original machine owned by Bob Burns.
Light sockets installed and the fans, same setup as the MGM machine.

The large ring that holds the pod onto the engine housing.

The ring was created in MDF using a router. Sanded and primed and ready to be molded. There are four mounting holes, same as the MGM machine.

The rear pod

Two rear pods vacuformed in acrylic plastic. These two I obtained from John Rigg years ago.
I had a paper overlay printed first to test the fit.
Paper pattern on the acrylic pod.
Final pattern was cut from vinyl and adhered to a petg laminant.

Motor Support and right angle gear set up.

Right angle drive support being welded together.
The motor support welded together
Motor installed in the support. It was a tight fit.

The vertical support lamp base

Individual components created. The upper portion was cast inside the bell of a trombone.
Thank You Richard Herd.

Richard Herd used to come by the shop when he was working on his various art projects and I'd help him out when he needed something done that he didn't have the right tools to do the job. One day he came in with a beat up trombone he wanted to use and I took a good look at it and then asked if he could get one for me. He had a source for broken down instruments, Next time he came by he brought me a trombone which I used to create the part for my machine. I filled the bell with resin and the casting became my part.

Parts stacked and ready for molding.
Top Finial machined from brass by Mike's Machining and Custom Works in Canada.
